Le pluriel des noms

  1. Regular plural forms.

As in English, the plural is formed by adding an -s to the singular form of the noun. Note, however, that the -s is not pronounced.

le livre → les livres (the books)
la table → les tables (the tables)
l’étudiant → les étudiants (the students)

  1. Nouns ending in -s, -x, -z.

Nouns ending in -s, -x, or -z do not change in the plural.

la souris → les souris (the mouses)
la noix → les noix (the nuts)
le nez → les nez (the noses)

  1. Nouns ending in -eau, -eu.

Nouns ending in -eu or -eau in the singular add -x in the plural.

le jeu → les jeux (the games)
le bateau → les bateaux (the boats)

  1. Nous ending in -ou.

The following nouns ending in -ou add -x in the plural :

  • un bijou (jewel) → des bijoux
  • un caillou (stone, pebble) → des cailloux
  • un chou (cabbage) → des choux
  • un genou (knee) → des genoux
  • un hibou (owl) → des hiboux
  • un pou (louse) → des poux

Other nouns in -ou add -s in the plural :

un bisou (kiss) → des bisous
un trou (hole) → des trous

  1. Nouns ending in -al, -ail, -au.

Nouns ending in -al, -ail, or -au in the singular end in -aux in the plural.

un journal (newspaper) → des journaux
un travail (work) → des travaux

!!! Exceptionsun festival, des festivals ; un bal, des bals ; etc.

  1. Irregular plural forms.

un œil (eye) → des yeux
madame, mademoiselle, monsieur → mesdames, mesdemoiselles, messieurs
