Le verbe “ouvrir”

The verb “ouvrir” (to open) is an irregular verb belonging to the 3rd conjugation group. That is, it does not follow the regular conjugation of 2nd group verbs like “finir“. Instead, for the present indicative, it follows the conjugation pattern of -ER verbs.

OUVRIR
j’ouvre
tu ouvres
il/elle/on ouvre
nous ouvrons
vous ouvrez
ils/elles ouvrent

Stem is : ouvr-.
Endings are similar to -ER verbs : –e, –es, –e, –ons, –ez, –ent.

Other verbs conjugated like “ouvrir” are :

  • offrir : to offer
  • découvrir : to discover
  • couvrir : to cover
  • souffrir : to suffer
