La lettre “S”

October 3, 2012

The consonant “s” in French is pronounced in 2 different ways :

1) Usually as [s] (स) :

  • At the beginning of a word. Ex : le sac (साक)
  • In front or after a consonant. Ex : espagnol (ऐस्प-), la danse (दांस)

2) But as [z] (ज़) :

  • Between two vowelsEx : la rose (रोज़), la musique (मुज़िक)

→ to obtain the sound [s] between two vowels, the consonant “s” is doubled. Ex : la classe (क्लास)
