Les verbes “écrire”, “lire” et “dire”

The irregular verbs “écrire” (to write), “lire” (to read) and “dire” (to say) have relatively similar conjugations.

ÉCRIRE
j’écris
tu écris
il/elle/on écrit
nous écrivons
vous écrivez
ils/elles écrivent

Endings are : -s, -s, -t, -ons, -ez, -ent.
Stem is : écri– ; a –v– is added for plural persons.

Other verbs conjugated like “écrire” are :

  • décrire : to describe
  • s’inscrire : to register

LIRE
je lis
tu lis
il/elle/on lit
nous lisons
vous lisez
ils/elles lisent

Endings are also : -s-s-t-ons-ez-ent.
Stem is : li– ; a –s– is added for plural persons.

Other verbs conjugated like “lire” :

  • élire : to elect

DIRE
je dis
tu dis
il/elle/on dit
nous disons
vous dites !!
ils/elles disent

Endings are the same as for “écrire” and “lire”, excepted for the person “vous”.
Stem is : di- ; a –s– is added for plural persons “nous” and “ils/elles”.

!!! Note the unusual form “vous dites“, unusual because not ending in -ez → “dire” is one of only three verbs where this is the case  (others verbs are : “faire” → vous faites ; “être” → vous êtes)

Other verbs conjugated like “dire” are :

  • contredire (!! vous contredisez contredites) : to contradict
  • interdire (!! vous interdisez interdites) : to forbid, to ban
