French Language in the World (le français dans le monde)

French is not spoken only in France. French is an official languages in 29 countries, including, apart from France and its dependent entities :

  • In America : Canada (and more specifically the French speaking province of Quebec)
  • In Europe :
    • Switzerland (with German, Italian and Romansch)
    • Belgium (with Dutch and German)
    • Luxembourg (with German and Luxembourgish)
    • Monaco
  • In Sub-Saharan Africa, most of the former French colonies :
    • Benin
    • Ivory Cost
    • Madagascar
    • Mali
    • Niger
    • Republic of Congo
    • Senegal
    • Togo
    • etc.

Without having the status of official language, French is also commonly used in :

  • Morocco (official languages : Arabic, Berber)
  • Algeria (official language : Arabic)
  • Tunisia (official language : Arabic)
  • Lebanon (official language : Arabic)
  • Mauritania (official language : Arabic)
  • Mauritius (official language : English)

  • Light blue : countries where French is commonly used, but doesn’t have an official status
  • Green : French speaking minorities
