La lettre “C”

The letter “C” in French is pronounced in different ways :

1) like the letter “k” (or ““) in front of :

  • a consonant, ex :  classe (f), crime (m)
  • the vowels “a“, o“, and u” , ex : cadeau (m), comment, culture (f)

2) like the letter “s” (or ““) in front of :

  • the vowels “e“, i“, and “y“, ex : France (f), merci

3) “ç” (or “c cédille”) is always pronounced as “s” (or ““).

  • A cedilla is added when “c” comes in front of the vowels “a“, “o“, or “u“, but has to be pronounced as “s“, ex : français, garçon (m), reçu

4) “ch” is pronounced as “sh” (or ““) :

  • ex : champion (m), champagne (m)

5) “cc” is pronounced as “ks” (or “क्स“)

  • ex : accent (m)

6) “sc” is pronounced

  • as “s” (or ““) in front of the vowels “e” and “i“, ex : scène (f)science (f)
  • as “sk” (or “स्क“) in front of the vowels “a“, “o” and “u” or a consonant, ex : escalade (f), scolaire, sculpture (f), script (m)
